Eine Natriumdampflampe, auch NDL genannt, strahlt ein orangenfarbiges Licht aus und gibt es in den Stärken von ca. 250 bis 1000 Watt. Die Natriumdampflampe eignet sich für die Beleuchtung von Pflanzen, da sie ein besonderes Lichtspektrum abgibt und auch Wärme produziert. Aufgrund der Wärmeproduktion müssen die Pflanzen daher einen gewissen Abstand, je nach Stärke der Lampe, etwa 15-30cm Abstand haben, damit diese nicht verbrennen. Sollte der Platz im Gewächshaus nicht vorhanden sein, gibt es auch Cooler Boxen, welche die Lampe kühlen und ermöglichen, dass der Abstand lediglich wenige Zentimeter beträgt.
Beim berühren der Natriumdampflampe sollte man ein Tuch benutzen, damit kein fett von den Fingern auf dem Leuchtmittel haften bleibt, welches dieses im schlimmsten Fall zerstören können. Um eine NDL betreiben zu können, ist in der Regel ein Vorschaltgerät von Nöten, welches Leuchtmittel und Steckdose verbindet.
